The Retribution tree is, and almost always has been, rather cookie cutter. While with Cata's release we did get some opportunities to sort of find our own way through the last few talents of the tree, even there the debates on which talents to take can be rather 1 sided.
Below, I will go through all talents in the Ret tree of any interest, and then go into the specs as a whole.
First, The bonuses that come by putting your first point in Ret are:
Sheath of Light - Increases your spell power by an amount equal to 30% of your attack power and increases your chance to hit with spells by 8%.
Two-Handed Weapon Specialization - Increases the damage you deal with two-handed melee weapons by 20%.
Mastery(80 Only); Hand of Light - Your autoattacks have a 8% chance to grant Hand of Light, causing your next Holy Power ability to consume no Holy Power and to cast as if 3 Holy Power were consumed. Each point of Mastery increases the chance by an additional 1%.
Talents & Specs
If you guys play a Ret Paladin at any level you can hit the "N" button, open up your tree and read each talent. I don't think I need to go through every single talent and tell you what this does. The reason I did that for spells was mainly so that people could watch what I have excluded and notice that things like Seal of Righteousness aren't on there because there is no situation in which they should be used. I will, however, link you to the preferred Wowhead Specs and talk briefly about some talents that you may question.
In my opinion, the best spec is this spec.
Now, this isn't necessarily "cookie cutter." There are, in fact, some optional talents or ones just based on preference.
An Eye for an Eye is an interesting talent. At first glance some will call it a pvp talent (mostly because it was for years) but it can be useful in a pve scene. Many bosses in this game use magical abilities and so it can provide some additional dps during a fight where you're being hit by magical attacks with any sort of regularity.
There is also Acts of Sacrifice. Hand of Salvation is one of the most useful abilities that we have and anything to improve it or Freedom, both of which are seriously useful in the right situation, can be very beneficial. I prefer Eye for an Eye for the minor dps boost, but Acts of Sacrifice is a perfectly viable option.
Some people still question Long Arm of the Law. Other than being the best named talent we have, this is a terribly useful proc. You should be opening every fight with a judgment and speeding in. The simple fact is that, the faster you can get to the boss, the more you can hit him. The more you can hit him, the higher your dps will be. Take this talent.
Other than that there aren't really any talents that you can question. Divine Storm can be debated if you just PVP but it can be very useful so hang onto that as well. Ret talents remain relatively straightforward so stick with the best build and you'll be good to go. More on PVP talents in the future.
